Commercial advertising in itself is permissible as it is a means of promotion. Allāh says: “Allāh has permitted trade…” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 275], and advertising is a means of trade.
Advertising in places of worship has different scenarios:
- Inside the mosque (prayer area): This is originally prohibited. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If you see someone buying or selling in the mosque, say: ‘May Allāh not make your trade profitable.'”
- In areas associated with the mosque, such as the entrance area, social halls, or entertainment halls, there is no harm with this.
- In other places of worship such as churches, synagogues, and temples, this is also permissible because the default principle is engaging with trade anywhere, which is allowed. Therefore, the means of trade, which includes advertising, is permissible. Even if part of the income from the advertising goes to the place of worship, there is no difference in permissibility based on the type of the place of worship, whether it be a church or another place.
