Firstly: A Muslim should enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong as much as they are able, using whatever means they can. Among the acts of enjoining good and forbidding wrong is the boycott of the products of the enemies of Islam and Muslims who are at war with them, as well as those who support them. A Muslim does this with the intention of seeking Allāh’s reward and as a form of jihād in the way of Allāh.
There are multiple pieces of evidence, both transmitted (naql) and rational (῾aql), for this:
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Strive against the polytheists with your wealth, yourselves, and your tongues.” [Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and An-Nasā᾽ī].
- The action of Thumāmah ibn ᾽Uthāl when he cut off supplies to the polytheists of Mecca and said, “By Allāh, not a grain of wheat will come to you from Yamāmah until the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) permits it.” [Agreed upon].
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) boycotted some of the people of Islam and prohibited dealings with them in matters less than warfare and disbelief, as happened with the three who stayed behind (in the battle of Tabūk). So, boycotting the enemies of Islam is more appropriate and obligatory.
This weakens their ranks, undermines their economy, and incites their general and specific public against them, which leads to their downfall and distracts them from hostility towards Muslims.
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever helps an oppressor to establish falsehood and invalidate a right, Allāh and His Messenger are free from him.” [Reported by Aṭ-Ṭabarānī in Al-Mu῾jam aṣ-Ṣaghīr, and Al-Ḥākim who said: authentic chain of narration].
It is evident that purchasing from the enemies of Islam strengthens their economy and enables them to manufacture and buy weapons to kill Muslims.
- Dealing with combatant disbelievers implies reliance on them, which entails losing Allāh’s mercy. Allāh says: “And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have besides Allāh any protectors; then you would not be helped.” [Hūd: 113].
- Allāh punished a people who did not commit injustice but shared life with the oppressors. This is evidenced by the ḥadīth reported by Aṭ-Ṭabarānī from Jābir, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “Allāh revealed to an angel to overturn such-and-such city on its inhabitants. The angel said: O Lord, among them is Your servant so-and-so who has never disobeyed You for a blink of an eye. Allāh said: Overturn it on him and on them, for his face never showed anger for My sake.” This ḥadīth is sound and has supporting narrations.
Therefore, boycotting is obligatory for everyone who can. Let us boycott the companies and products of those who openly support the Zionists and announce this in all forums so that these entities know they will pay the price for their support.
Secondly: As for stores owned by Muslims selling Zionist products, it is most likely that they are unaware of the source. It is our duty to inform and advise them and send them an authenticated list of Zionist products that should be boycotted.
Thirdly: Regarding local companies in America where some Muslims work and which support the Zionist entity, if a Muslim can leave such companies for another job that suffices for their needs and their family’s needs without significant hardship, it is obligatory to leave. However, if this is difficult and would cause significant hardship, they may continue working there with the intention of taking their salary from them for themselves and for the sake of Allāh and His Messenger, using it to support themselves and help Muslims, thereby turning their money against them.
It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) bought from the disbelievers of Mecca while they were at war when he needed a sheep.
